The first major title from Russian developer Mundfish, Atomic Heart is set in the Soviet Union in an alternate version of 1955. In this timeline, the USSR won WW2 using advanced robotics and has become a world leader in science and technology, even replacing human workers with robots. Players take on the role of a KGB agent sent to explore a secretive manufacturing facility overrun with robots and genetically engineered horror, which must be overcome using Atomic Heart’s weapons and combat abilities. Although screenshots and trailers for Atomic Heart may give it the appearance of a traditional first-person shooter, the developers have stated that the game will also feature action RPG elements and a crafting system for creating new weapons.

Gaming news site WhatIfGaming claims that a “reliable source” has revealed that Atomic Heart will be releasing on consoles and PC on February 21, 2023. Although this release date has yet to be confirmed by developer Mundfish or publisher Focus Entertainment, WhatIfGaming has expressed faith in the accuracy of the leak. While a February release date may be later than the winter release window that gamers were expecting, if Mundfish’s claims that Atomic Heart is “way crazier” than Doom and Wolfenstein prove true, then it could very well be worth the wait.
When Atomic Heart releases, it is certain to be one of the most eye-catching games on the market, with the game’s screenshots and trailers showing off Mundfish’s masterful use of Unreal Engine 4 to bring the game’s unique settings and enemies to life. Trailers for the game have highlighted the use of ray tracing in Atomic Heart to add even more life to the Soviet sci-fi setting, though it is yet to be confirmed if the console versions of the game will include the feature. Even if the console versions don’t feature all the bells and whistles of their PC counterpart, Xbox gamers will still have plenty to celebrate, as Atomic Heart is a day-one release on Xbox Game Pass.
Even while taking clear influence from popular titles like Bioshock and the STALKER games, Atomic Heart has managed to create one of the most unique and visually distinct game worlds in recent years. If the game’s crafting, RPG, and combat systems can live up to the same high bar set by its gorgeous graphics, then gamers will be in for a dose of retro delight when Atomic Heart launches for PC and consoles.
