The Royals offered no details of how Perez was hit with the injury on Wednesday, but the six-time All-Star and four-time Golden Glover has already undergone an MRI scan.

The 28-year-old will travel to Los Angeles next week for more testing on his damaged ulnar collateral ligament with a specialist.

Kansas City are waiting to learn the length of Perez’s lay-off in a position where their roster does not have a great deal of depth.

MLB Network has reported that the Royals have made contact with free agent Martin Maldonado.

Perez has a career slash line of .266/.297/.442 and has averaged almost 18 home runs and 63 RBIs in an eight-year MLB career.

He has caught 35 per cent of attempted base-stealers, well above the league expected percentage, and has a career .995 fielding percentage.
