Ufologists say it’s the military that is confused. ““The air force is trying to pull a fast one,’’ says Stanton Friedman, who has written two books on Roswell. ““If they said they had dumped dummies in 1947, I would have raised a very big eyebrow - but they couldn’t, because no one was doing that then.’’ There’s more at stake than the government’s word. Roswell has built two UFO museums and a small industry around the 1947 incident. This week the town expects 100,000 tourists to come celebrate the 50th anniversary of the discovery in the sheep field. ““People are caught up in a mania,’’ says Walter Haut, a retired army PR officer who believes a UFO landed. ““Maybe someday the government will come out with satisfactory information, but some people will never be satisfied. This whole thing has gotten out of hand.’’ Now, there’s an alien idea that deserves more exposure.
