Entering the final 18 holes a stroke behind the leaders, McIlroy faded in a string of bogeys. He finished sixth.

The winner: France’s Victor Dubuisson, whose 66 brought him to 22-under for the Turkish Airlines Open. That was a stroke better than South Africa’s Jaco Van Zyl.

“It’s always disappointing whenever you have a chance to win and you don’t play well enough to do that,” McIlroy said. “I’ll be going away from this tournament very disappointed with how I played today.”

The tipping point for McIlroy? Bogeys on the eighth, ninth and 12th holes.
